High School

Acting and Directing allows students to practice a variety of acting/directing skills and techniques in an individualized and intensive setting. Units of study include improvisation, accent and character work, script study, theater into film, and directing for theatrical production. Students are required to perform or direct outside of class at least once a year in a mainstage production, and have the opportunity to act in or student-direct numerous productions over the course of the year. 

Band students will develop an appreciation of the instrumental arts through the execution of a performance based concert series, coupled with classroom approaches designed to enhance the musicality of the individual student. Students will learn the Foundations of Music Theory through work in the piano lab, including sight reading, musical notation, and chord development. Student choice is heavily involved in development of the band’s repertoire and performance pieces. Students are required to perform outside of class as a band once per trimester and have opportunities for individual and small group performance throughout the year.

Chorus students will develop an appreciation for the choral arts through the execution of a performance based concert series, coupled with classroom approaches designed to enhance the musicality of the individual student. Units of study include introduction to sight singing, introduction to the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), and Music Theory. Students are required to perform outside of class as a chorus once per trimester and have opportunities for individual and small group performance throughout the year.

Technical Theater and design is an opportunity for students to express themselves through the art of theater. The course focuses on beginning stagecraft techniques that are the foundation for technical theater. Units of study include lighting, sound, props, set design, and production management. Through projects and work on mainstage productions, students gain the confidence and technique needed to become skilled technicians. Students are required to work in a technical capacity outside of class at least once a year in a mainstage production, and have the opportunity to participate in numerous theatrical, music, and dance productions throughout the year as a technician. 

Stagecraft introduces students to a practical approach to technical and production aspects. Students learn the skills needed to construct scenery and props, hang and focus lighting instruments, and work with sound systems. Students are trained in the use of tools, lumber, and machinery. Students will play an active role in the current production. The final project in the spring is the selection and analysis of a play and the design of a scale model. 

This course introduces students to the foundational skills of fashion design, including the basic use and care of sewing equipment, garment construction, and introductory patternmaking. Students will explore how fashion reflects identity, culture, and societal trends, while also gaining insight into the fashion industry and its relevance to their own lives. By the end of the course, students will have developed the core skills necessary to continue their journey in fashion design.

Building upon the skills developed in Intro to Fashion Design I, this advanced course deepens students’ understanding of construction and patternmaking techniques and industry standards. Students will engage in more complex patternmaking and individualized design projects, honing their technical and creative abilities. Emphasis is placed on portfolio development and preparing for future opportunities in fashion, whether academic or professional.

This course focuses on the art of costume design for stage and performance. Students will learn about sewing equipment, garment construction, and patternmaking, with a specific emphasis on how historical and character-driven design choices influence costume creation. Students will study the relationship between costume and storytelling through participation in costuming for Performing Arts shows. This course is ideal for those interested in combining creative design with theatrical expression.

In this hands-on, trimester-based course, students will explore fiber arts through rotating units such as knitting, crochet, and sewing. Each trimester focuses on a different skill, allowing students to build foundational skills in a range of textile practices. Students will learn about fiber materials, tools, and the cultural relevance of fiber arts while developing craftsmanship and creative expression.
