Math Day Fall 2021
October 31st, 2021
Several times a year the Landmark Math Department hosts Math Day, when every math class comes together to explore thematic, hands-on, mathematical concepts—usually with some level of competition involved.
On Friday, October 29, 2021, Math Day focused around a favorite topic: coffee.
Landmark High School Math Department Head, Adam Craig, shared the three goals for this math day.
three Goals for Math Day:
1. Help students consider a "real-life" overlap between math and coffee through identifying the ratios involved when creating espresso drinks (e.g. cortado, cappuccino, and latte), along with the executive functioning required to plan ahead when crafting cold brew.
2. Help students build stronger class communities through the creative problem-solving activity of making their own "coffee holders" out of limited resources.
3. To promote a local business, whose owner has taken numerous steps to foster collaborative relationships with many community members.
The following video, accompanied by some pauses with ratio questions, was shown to students at the beginning of the class period.
Take a look at some of the fun!
