Partnership with Google
April 7th, 2023
Partnering To Develop Change
Landmark School continues its tradition of helping not only our students but all those who struggle to read. For over five decades, we have partnered with thought leaders to raise and improve awareness of dyslexia and other language-based learning differences. Over the last couple of years, Landmark has partnered with other non-profit organizations such as Understood.org to help Google develop its redesign of "Reading Mode" in the Chrome browser.
Project History
During the first weeks of the COVID lockdown in 2020, Landmark began collaborating with the Abilities Innovation & Research division of Google.
Initially, we participated in intensive focus and prototyping periods where the team looked at ways that Google Chrome and Chrome OS could support users with dyslexia and other specific learning disabilities (SLDs).
Since those first meetings, our relationship with Google's Accessibilities teams has grown. On March 28, 2023, Google announced five game-changing Chromebook updates for students and teachers. In this announcement, Landmark School's contributions to the redesign of the Reading Mode feature in the Chrome browser was formally announced (Check out item 4).
On Friday, April 7, 2023 the next phase of Landmark's work will begin when a group of our faculty will meet with staff from Google's Accessibilities team. The following week, select classes will participate in using the pre-release of the new features before the updates go live.
Google's public acknowledgment of our contributions to helping learners with literacy challenges validates the previous and future work we will do with them and others.
