The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is arguably one of the most venerable and longest-running art awards program for teens in the United States. Every year, our High School Art Department works closely with students to create, curate, and submit pieces of work to the program. Our students always perform well and occasionally, a piece advances to the national competition and wins an award at that level. This year, Landmark senior, Nicholas Csongor's charcoal drawing entitled Night (see artwork below), received a Silver Medal in the final round of the competition. Finalists will be recognized in a ceremony in New York City in June 2023. 

The head of Landmark High School Visual Art Department, Beth Jamieson, had this to say about Nick's art career at the School. "Nick started coming up to the Art Department during his free time to independently work in clay as a 10th grader. We noticed his detailed sculptures and wondered why he didn't take an art class. Nick officially joined the department as a Junior in Drawing class during the second year of COVID. He was reserved and hard-working and over the course of the year he became more confident and his individual style emerged. His National award-winning work was produced in the spring of his Junior year and is a white charcoal drawing on black paper of a photograph he took at night. As a senior, Nick has emersed himself in his creative pursuits inside and outside of the classroom. He is constantly learning new media, combining unique materials that he finds and fabricates—including taxidermied insects. He's highly motivated by his own ideas and you can see his imagination and curiosity in each of his projects."

This year, Landmark submitted 66 pieces of original artwork representing disciplines as diverse as woodworking, drawing, painting, ceramics, mixed media, and many others. 23 of those 66 pieces received Gold (9), Silver (6), or Honorable Mention (8) recognition. The Gold Medal pieces advanced to the national competition, with Nick's piece being selected for a Silver Medal.

Nick will be attending Massachusetts College of Art & Design in Boston in the fall where he plans to study Industrial Design.
