If I Built a Boat...

October 14th, 2022

Several Landmark elementary classes were treated to a special enrichment lesson this week that was organized by EMS teacher, Mrs. Parker. Mrs. Parker's husband, Will Parker, presented an incredibly interesting lesson about the boat-building process to the elementary students. Will is a Landmark alumnus who works at C.W. Hood Yachts, a custom boat company out of Marblehead, Massachusetts. He first presented a Google Slides presentation that guided students through the process of making a mold, creating the fiberglass hull, sealing it with epoxy, and then adding sails, booms, and a motor to put the finishing touches on a customized boat.

Students then had the chance to go outside and take a look at the Athena, a 32-foot wooden sailboat. Will pointed out the main components of the sailboat—the rutter, the motor, and the keel—and then answered questions from all of the eager students in the crowd. Meanwhile, Mrs. Parker guided students individually up a ladder so that they could check out the innerworkings of the boat. All of the students were delighted to learn more about custom-made boats and be able to touch and see a yacht on their campus.
