Beyond Our Walls
April 11th, 2023
Landmark's mission is to empower students with language-based learning disabilities, such as dyslexia. We have long held that the work of fulfilling this mission extends beyond the walls of our physical school and our small population of students. Landmark has increasingly had a precense and role in awareness raising, thought leadership, and training educators and parents.
These initiatives benefit our students as they move on from Landmark School. But they also reach beyond our walls to help students who may not have the opportunity to attend Landmark School. We want students to enter the workforce with employers who understand and celebrate people with dyslexia's strengths, creativity, and other unique and valuable gifts. Similarly, we want students in other schools to be in classrooms with educators who know how to effectively teach students with dyslexia as well as others so that all students can be empowered.
Landmark has been a part of several recent opporunities to continue this work.
World Dyslexia Assembly
Recently, Landmark's Head of School, Josh Clark, had the opportunity to lead a panel of educators at the World Dyslexia Assembly in NYC hosted by Made by Dyslexia. Many high-profile dyslexic personalities, such as Richard Branson (Founder of the Virgin Group), Eric Adams (Mayor of NYC), Barbara Corcoran (Shark Tank), Princess Beatrice of the UK, and many others, came together to elevate awareness around and redefine dyslexia. They highlighted educating students with dyslexia, the power of employing people with dyslexia, and how dyslexia has shaped and created many successful people.
The Truth About Reading
Landmark partnered with The Reading League to support a viewing of the film, The Truth About Reading. The documentary highlighted the plight of literacy and the need for better reading instruction centered on the science of reading. Following the documentary, Emily Hanford of the popular podcast Sold A Story, led a panel discussion with reading specialists, researchers, department of education, and others. The documentary was aired at the end of BU Wheelock's Forum which this year focused on literacy.
