After a decade of dreaming and designing, 43 eighth graders from Landmark School set off on the inaugural Washington, D.C. trip in early May. Starting with an early wake-up and flight, the group kicked off the experience with an unforgettable meal at the world-famous Ben’s Chili Bowl. With full stomachs, they hit the ground running, taking in as many outdoor memorials as they could including Iwo Jima, Korean War, 911, Lincoln, and Duke Ellington. There's so much to see in D.C.!

On day two, and despite the rain, they took in the Holocaust, African American History, and Air and Space Museums as well as the Capitol building.

Day three included visits to Mount Vernon with a live Revolutionary War re-enactment as well as exhibits at the Natural History and American History Museums. Students soaked up every opportunity to connect their classroom learning to these historic places, explored all that D.C. had to offer, and most of all, spent time with classmates making memories they’ll never forget.

Chaperones included Ms. Joly-Lowdermilk, Mr. Miller, Mr. McKernan, Ms. Polvinen, and Mr. Sidell. In just three days, they saw students’ independence grow, as well as their confidence in themselves as learners, travelers, and peers. The students had a blast and should be applauded for walking an average of 8.5 miles per day without too many complaints! They will all remember their tour guide's familiar refrain “Go when you can, not when you must.” For these eighth graders, this D.C. trip was a must!
