A Taste of Wind Farm Construction
December 4th, 2024
This fall, our high school community observed a strange and impressive vessel just off our shores. After some investigation, we learned that the Sea Installer, a Wind Turbine Installation Vessel (WTIV) based out of Salem Harbor, has been at work helping to build components of the windmills that are being installed off of Martha's Vineyard. "Sea Installer, which measures more than 430 feet in length and 150 feet wide, is a heavy lift jack up vessel that lifts itself out of the water on legs that are over 300 feet in length. Once elevated, the vessel becomes a platform where the recently upgraded crane, now capable of lifting more than 1600 metric tons, can install the tower sections, nacelle, and blades for each turbine."*
Jennifer Wyte, math teacher at Landmark's High School, is eager to use Sea Installer as inspiration to help her students solve real-world mathematical challenges. "This vessel has caught the attention of my students and I'm happy to take advantage of this opportunity to highlight the relevance of everyday math. Our unique campus location, situated right on the coast, enables us to use our natural surroundings to bring math to life.
