Hero’s Journey with Landmark 8th-Graders

January 31st, 2025

Eighth-grade students in Mrs. Andrew's Oral Expression/Literature class have been exploring A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness through the lens of the Hero’s Journey, a narrative structure developed by Joseph Campbell that expands upon the traditional plot diagram.

While a plot diagram outlines the rising action, climax, and resolution of a story, the Hero’s Journey delves deeper into a character’s transformation, emphasizing personal growth, internal struggles, and pivotal moments of change. Students analyzed how the protagonist's experiences align with each stage, from his initial struggles to his emotional transformation. By selecting key quotes and providing their own insights, they engaged deeply with the novel’s themes of grief, truth, and self-acceptance. To culminate the project, students presented their analysis to staff, demonstrating their understanding and sparking meaningful discussions about personal growth and resilience.
